Fern Cave NWR protects limestone bluffs, hemlock–mixed forest and one of the largest gray bat hibernacula in the eastern US. Photographers should focus on dramatic bluff silhouettes, river/forest landscapes, and, where permitted, dusk bat emergences (seasonal). Access to the cave is restricted by USFWS; much of the refuge is walk-in only with primitive parking on nearby roads. Visit at golden hour for warm light on bluffs; avoid bat roost closures (spring/fall) and check refuge regulations/perm
