A converted rail-trail threading southern Illinois woods, limestone cuttings and several historic tunnels — dramatic leading lines, tunnel portals, seasonal fall color and river views near Vienna. Best at golden hour or overcast for even forest light; fall and spring offer peak color and blooms. Trail is crushed limestone, mostly flat and walkable; free access and parking at the Vienna trailhead (302 E Vine St). Some sections remote — bring water, insect repellent and cell backup.
