Landscape of a 60 feet high. It was built in 1881 for the Chicago and Alton Railroad. As traffic got heavier and trains heavier as well, it was girded in reinforcing bars of steel and encased in the concrete that everyone sees today. The reinforcing happened in 1918, now over 100 years ago in itself. It’s remarkable that this bridge has held up so long when most of its peers have been knocked down and replaced long ago.
