Old-growth Appalachian forest with towering hemlocks, rhododendron tunnels, sandstone outcrops and clear mountain streams. Ideal for moody woodland scenes, autumn color, spring wildflowers and intimate moss/macro studies. Small preserve with a short network of trails and limited parking at the trailhead; no entrance fee but preserve rules require staying on trails. Best at dawn for low-angle light and fog, or overcast days for even forest light. Trails can be muddy—wear boots and pack a tripod.
