Photographers shoot wide tidal channels, reed-lined foregrounds, shorebirds, herons, egrets and wintering waterfowl. Best at dawn/dusk and during spring/fall migration for peak bird activity and dramatic skies. Access is limited—the refuge has no developed visitor facilities and much of the island is closed to vehicles; most photographers approach by kayak or boat from nearby Poquoson
