Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge

Longleaf pine savannas, open sand ridges and seasonal wildflowers create graphic, low-contrast landscapes and excellent birding (grassland and pine specialists). Best at sunrise/sunset for warm light and long shadows; spring for blooms and fall/winter for migratory birds. Area has small trailheads and parking; roads can be sandy—high-clearance vehicle sometimes helpful. No entrance fee; check refuge hours and respect wildlife closures.
