San Juan National Forest
Vast alpine landscapes of the San Juan Mountains: jagged peaks, subalpine lakes, aspen groves, wildflower meadows and historic mining ruins. Prime for sunrise/sunset mountain light and fall aspen color (late Sept–early Oct). Accessible from multiple trailheads and scenic byways (some high roads require 4x4 or are seasonal). USFS passes may be required for some trailheads; expect snow outside late spring–early fall. Low light pollution makes it excellent for nightscapes.
