Ōyunohara Sanctuary

Ōyunohara Sanctuary is the vast white sand plain in front of Kumano Hongū Taisha dominated by the enormous Otorii gate — dramatic minimal compositions, long low lines and seasonal light make it a standout. Visit at sunrise or sunset for warm side-light and long shadows; misty mornings add mood. Easily reached by car/bus from Hongū; free access to the plain (respect that it is sacred). Weekdays and early morning reduce crowds; weather can be windy — bring protection for gear.
